Course Content
Year 1
Languages
You'll take core language modules. These modules focus on developing your fluency, accuracy and communication expertise. Examples may include:
- Spanish Language and Society I
- Spanish Grammar
By taking Italian ab initio, you will follow an intensive, fast-track programme. Examples may include:
- Ab Initio Italian Language Skills
- Ab Initio Italian Language and Society
- Ab Initio Italian Grammar
Linguistics
You will take linguistics modules, examples of which may include:
- Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology
- Introduction to Syntax
You will take both modules in Year 1 if you have an A level in both languages. You will take these modules across Years 1 and 2 if you are studying one language ab initio.
Year 2
Languages
You'll study core language modules in Italian and Spanish, examples of which may include:
- Spanish Language and Cultures: Advanced
- Italian Language and Cultures: Advanced
You will also study four option modules. In previous years, options have covered topics such as:
- Historical Memory in the Spanish-speaking World
- Hispanic Culture Through Film
- The Role of Art in Italian Society
- Filming the Nation: Cinematic Representations of Modern Italy
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language I
- Intermediate Phonetics and Phonology

- Introduction to Language Acquisition

Year 3
- Year Abroad (You can divide the year abroad between two locations, Italy and a Spanish-speaking country, or you can choose to spend the whole year in one location.)
Year 4
Core modules

- Italian Language and Cultures: Proficient
You'll choose a selection of option modules from languages or linguistics in addition to the core modules.
