Quantity Surveyor

About Quantity Surveyor

Quantity surveyors are usually employed in the construction industry. They offer expert advice on construction cost planning and management, from project inception till post-completion.

Nature of the job

Your work is critical in determining the profitability of construction projects. The architects, civil engineers and clients will come to you with the budgets that they have drawn up. You need to have a practical mind and exercise your professional judgement before incorporating them into your cost planning. Industrial knowledge and experience will come in handy. It will help you to decide if the proposed pricing is within the acceptable market range, or is there room for negotiation and optimisation for potential cost savings, at no compromise of quality.

You will be interacting with a wide variety of people on a daily basis in your line of work. They may include civil engineers, architects, project managers, clients, and buyers. That said, strong communication skills in both written and speech forms are important.

With this role, you could work for either the client or the contractor, in an office or on site, with occasional weekend commitment. Even if your primary work setting is in an office, you may need to visit the building sites from time to time, so have your safety hats and boots handy! The need to be outdoors may be the reason why this is a male-dominated profession, traditionally speaking. However, there are more female recruits on board in recent years.
