Preschool teachers educate and care for children of age 3-5 years about the basics of reading, writing, math and science.
Nature of the jobWhile spending time with a bunch of young children may sound really fun, the reality is, it IS fun but it can also be very demanding and drain a lot of your energy. Be prepared mentally and physically (with energy bar ever ready in your pocket) to deal with happy kids (always a delight), cheeky kids, naughty kids, crying kids, cranky kids, poopy kids (true story). The point is, the struggle is real. You need to manage them so that your classroom can function smoothly. On top of that, you need to deal with parents, who sometimes can be more difficult than the kids. They may come to you complaining about the smallest things or their many requests. Be patient and try to understand that parents are just being protective of their children. You need to genuinely love kids to stay long term in this role. It is still a very sought after job, as working with kids often gives us the simplest, purest form of joy :)
There is not much upward job mobility with this line of work. If you like to seek for new challenges from time to time for personal growth, this may not be the job you want to pursue. It can be rather routine. Of course, you may set up your own preschool should you want to venture into the business aspect of this industry.
