Electrical Design Engineer


Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism.

Nature of the job

Electrical design is one of the crucial elements in driving technological advances enjoyed throughout the global society. Think robotics, electrical substations, power distribution, communication equipment, computer circuit design, amongst many others.

The job scope can be extensive and very complex, and it usually requires long hours of dedication in planning, creating, testing the electrical design concepts.  You need to go through numerous rounds of design iterations and testing to make sure that your electrical system works as per design intent and most importantly, it is safe for application. You need strong team spirit and interpersonal skills to interact with clients and other professionals like mechanical engineers and software engineers.

The project cycle is usually tight, so you need to manage your time efficiently and deliver on schedule. Peak period usually happens in the first half of the project cycle, from project initiation till design lockdown stage. There will be several rounds of prototype builds and testing in between. The real job satisfaction kicks in when you see your designs come alive during production or available in the market!

Job Description

Be involved in developing a new marketable product or improving an existing one. This includes but not limited to:

  • Design or improve electrical systems (schematics, panel layouts, etc) for new products that meet customers’ requirements, safety and regulatory guidelines
  • Prepare circuit diagrams using relevant electrical design tools/ software
  • Support prototype builds. Analyse and solve arising issues through design improvement
  • Perform robustness/ verification tests to ensure all product specifications are met
  • Any ad hoc tasks that may be assigned from time to time
