Course Content
Year 1
You will study core modules split across your two departments:
- German Grammar
- German Language and Society I
- Beginning Philosophy
- Ethics
- Ancient Philosophy
- Reason and Argument A
You will also choose one of the following linguistics modules:
- Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology
- Introduction to Semantics
- Introduction to Syntax
- LFA module at any level
If you are taking German ab initio, you will follow an intensive, fast-track programme with more German. You will not study any linguistics.
- Ab Initio German Language Skills
- Ab Initio German Language and Society
- Ab Initio German Grammar
Year 2
Core modules
You will take one core module in each subject.
- German Language and Society II
- Philosophy of Language
Option modules
You'll also choose a number of option modules from each subject.
- German
Choose one of the following:
- The Berlin Republic
- Contemporary German-speaking Film
You will study one further module from the Department of Language and Linguistic Science. You can either study one of the language options listed above or choose one of the following linguistics modules:
- Intermediate phonetics and phonology
- Intermediate semantics
- Intermediate syntax
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language I
You can choose to replace this module with a language option from our Languages for All programme, or an elective module from another department.
Philosophy
You'll take two Key Ideas modules. These modules look in more depth at topics across theoretical philosophy and philosophy concerned with value, as well as the history of philosophy.

Year 3

- Independent Study
- Applied Phonological Theory: Clinical Data in English
You can choose to replace this module with a language option from our Languages for All programme, or an elective module from another department.
