This is How You Get to Study in Top Universities You Thought You Couldn’t Afford

By Hamizah Adzmi - September 03, 2018
Guides & Advice Wait! Don’t be too quick to dismiss your dream university.

Finishing your Diploma, Foundation, or any Pre-University course must be a relief. You’re nearly at the finish line and about to take on your Degree!

But then the anticipation starts to fade when you stop to ask: “Can my family afford this?”

This question frequently comes up during counselling sessions, by both students, and their parents.

We hope to give you a better picture of the affordability of courses by providing you different ways for you to show that you can ease your financial burden.

Find Scholarships

This could be the most common cost-effective way for students to fund their education.

There are different types of scholarships from different types of providers. Merit scholarships are given based on academic achievements.

They are especially common for those who are moving on to their Degree and are often sponsored by their institution of choice. Depending on the institution, some can even go up to 100% based on your results alone!

You can also consider applying for scholarship awards provided by corporate companies or foundations; these scholarships have their own terms and conditions set upon them and you’ll have to attend an interview.

Try our Pathway Check to see what scholarships you qualify for! There are also full scholarships available for Diploma/Degree in Nursing with Sunway Medical and various full scholarships from Limkokwing University.

Apply for a PTPTN Loan

Another option most students would take is to apply for a PTPTN loan (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional).

The loan provides the opportunity for students to pursue higher education by financing a full or partial tuition fee during their study period at an interest rate of only 1%!

If you manage to pay back your study loan within 6 months of graduating, this 1% interest won’t need to be paid!

On top of that, if you get a First Class Honours for your Degree, you can convert your loan into a scholarship. And YES that means you don’t have to pay back! Rejoice!

There is probably nowhere else you can find such a great deal, and you won’t lose anything for applying.

There are three different PTPTN loan categories with its own criteria, which is illustrated below:

Note: BR1M is now known as Cost of Living Aid

Once you’ve determined which category you belong to, you need to be aware that the total amount you’ll get is dependant on the type of university you’ll be attending (public or private) as well as the field of studies you will undertake (Science/Arts/Medicine).

Check out the table below for an easy reference:

Apply to Your University Through Uni Enrol and Get a Bursary

When you apply through Uni Enrol and enrol in the university, you are eligible for a RM 300 bursary* provided by us!

* Terms and conditions apply

Combine All the Above Ways to Reach Your Education Goals!

When you get a merit scholarship from your chosen institution, you are still eligible to apply for a PTPTN loan. In fact most universities will help you with the application.

In a situation where your scholarship only covers 50% of your tuition fee, you can pay the other half with your PTPTN loan and still have leftover to be used for living expenses.

Depending on the amount of fees you have to pay, it’s also possible that you won’t have to pay anything at all!

To give you a better picture, we’ve shortlisted popular courses among students and cost-effective options you can take.
